Ceramics from the Southern Alps

Handmade with love from Wanaka, NZ

Brewster Hut in Winter

Hi, I’m Erica, the maker behind Arête Earthware. I began working with clay in 2016 and have been lucky enough to be mentored and supported by some of the best potter’s in Wanaka’s growing Ceramics Community.

My inspiration comes directly from the geological wonders that surround me: Soaring mountains rising straight up from turquoise glacial lakes, endless rolling hills of golden tussocks, complex beech forests, glacial carved valleys. I’m forever inspired by mother nature’s intricate color palettes and diverse textures so it comes as no surprise that these are the same colors and textures that influence my work.

Outside of playing with clay, I spend most of my free time roaming the hills and exploring New Zealand’s endless backcountry. As an American born flatlander, I’m in constant awe of the area I get to call home and love spending as much time running, hiking, biking and climbing through the unique terrain of the Southern Alps.

I work from a shared studio space with three others in the heart of Wanaka’s CBD. It’s not uncommon to find one of all four of us in the studio on a rainy day, pottering away. We welcome visitors and all work can be viewed or collected in the studio by appointment.
